All of our social media pages are beginning to fill up with “back to school” photos as the summer winds down. Gone are the days of the chalkboards in front of toothless kids proclaiming the first day of 3rd grade. While dealing with kids leaving the nest, many of us are dealing with aging parents flocking to the nest. We joke that at some point in our lives, Sunday night dinner with our parents became an excellent meal and 1 hour of tech support helping them navigate their cellphones, hook up their new printer, etc. As our parents got older, tech support was replaced with medicine support, from organizing pills to reviewing the doctor's appointments for the upcoming week and reviewing their lab work on their patient portal.
As our kids age, they want less help from us, and as our parents age, they need more help from us. And where are we in all of this—sandwiched in the middle!
